The BestBuy Saga Continues - Macs at BestBuy.com - Aug 11, 2003 1:48am - opinion
If you've had a Mac for a while, you may know about Apple's recent history with BestBuy. Over the past several years, Apple has started up and broken off its relationship with BestBuy (and several other large retailers) a few times. BestBuy hasn't ever been able to pull through selling Macs... whenever they've tried, their Mac sections have always been a mess. Yet Apple is once again giving them a try. After an apparently successful venture at selling iPods, BestBuy is going to give the Mac their best try -- yet again.

Since none of the nearby BestBuys are in the Mac pilot program, I decided to check out their website. Sure enough, they have several Macs (and accessories) in stock, including a couple iMacs, an eMac, several PowerBooks (12", 15", and even 17"), and a 12" iBook.

I was sort of excited after seeing on BestBuy's front page a big rebate icon that said "$150 mail-in rebate on all notebook PCs", which linked to their notebooks page, which lists all the Macs. After looking a little closer, I noticed that none of the Macs had the rebate listed, yet all the PCs did. What gives? Aren't Apple's notebooks, well, notebooks? I just hope that BestBuy's web gurus are plain lazy and haven't gotten around to listing the rebates for the Macs. At least they have free shipping.

Of course, it really doesn't matter to me. I believe some of the many rumors flying around about new PowerBooks coming any day now... or at least, any week. And until they do, I'm not about to go out and buy one of these practically ancient PowerBooks on the market right now. At least, not through BestBuy... I'd go get my college discount at Apple's Education Store and pick up the PowerBook for $1399 along with a $69 iPod. Now that's a good deal.

Do I think that BestBuy's going to work out this time around? I guess it's hard to say. If they can get a real Apple staffer in their stores, then maybe there's a chance. And it's going to take a big change of heart in a lot of BestBuy employees... you can't sell Macs if you tell everyone they're no good and then shove a PC down their throat! Ever consider giving them a nice commission, Apple? We'll all just have to wait and see... and if I'm lucky, I'll eventually be able to go play on all the new Macs I can't afford at my local BestBuy store!
